Meet Mimi Director of Community and Philanthropy
Mimi Nartey is an interdisciplinary scholar and philanthropist who is passionate about integrating science, business, and philosophy to promote sustainability and empowerment. Her diverse experiences, ability to consider problems from an interdisciplinary perspective, personal motivations, diligence, and rigorous academic preparation have placed Mimi in a unique position to pioneer new approaches to social challenges in communities around the globe.
Mimi has a B.A. in environmental biology and an M.A. in climate and society from Columbia University in the City of New York. She completed her doctorate in public health with a comparative education minor. She held a lecturing appointment at the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability and adjunct faculty positions at Occidental College and LMU. She is a women’s empowerment scholar and contributed a chapter to Women Worldwide: Transnational Feminist Perspectives on Women (McGraw-Hill Publishers). Her research experience includes antimalarial drug development, using climate forecasting of disease epidemics, interventions for maternal and child health, and sports for health promotion. She is the founder of Race, Class, and Parenting (RCAP), a marketplace of ideas for women who are thought leaders and influencers to engage in dialogue on social dynamics and parenting in communities of affluence. She has an e-book series available on Amazon on this subject and is a contributing editor to a virtual parenting magazine.
Formerly a professional soccer player, she represented Ghana in the FIFA Women’s World Cup and earned a silver medal in the African Cup of Nations. In 2016, she gave a TEDx Talk entitled "African Women's Soccer and Empowerment: Memoirs of a Black Queen." In 2018, she and her husband co-founded The Nartey Sports Foundation (the charitable giving arm of GLOBL RED) to support sports-related interventions for underserved youth, and she serves as executive director.
Mimi has been invited to keynote and present on leadership, sustainability, and empowerment around the world, including at the American Public Health Association Conference (Louisiana, USA); the Unite For Sight Global Health and Innovation Conference at Yale University (Connecticut, USA); the Ghana Ministry of Health (Accra, Ghana); California Association of REALTORS® WomanUp Conference (California, USA); Side x Side Annual Real Estate Conference (California, USA); Dance/USA (Washington, D.C., USA); the Asian Council of Exercise and Sports Science (Kaifeng, China); and the Active Model School Forum (Suzhou, China). She has also had multiple media appearances on Spectrum News 1.
She is married to Kofi N. Nartey, MBA, and the couple was named a 2018 and 2019 “Los Angeles Power Couple" in Modern Luxury Angeleno Magazine and LA Confidential Magazine. In December 2019, she was also named to Modern Luxury Angeleno Magazine’s “Dynamic Women” list. They live with their two precocious children, Liya and Lincoln, in Playa Vista, California.
